As part of the “Hope Day for Suicide Prevention” activities, historian Professor Ibrahim Al-Allaf stated that suicide is an act linked to cultural, social, and political contexts studied by history. He added that it is not an isolated individual act, given its connection to extraordinary circumstances and events.
During a lecture delivered at the University Theater on Monday morning, April 6, 2026, Al-Allaf pointed out that the perception and handling of suicide have undergone several historical transformations. He explained that suicide has been linked to major historical upheavals that directly impacted mental health and fostered a sense of individual despair.
Al-Allaf’s participation aimed to provide a historical perspective on addressing suicide and understanding the accumulation of events that have led to a near-consensus: that the decision to end one’s life is primarily caused by psychological disorders or the consumption of psychotropic substances.
